The Skylight Calendar Gives the Family Plan Somewhere to Live

One visible place for calendars, chores, meals, lists, routines, and the details that usually live inside one person’s head.

A shared calendar app can hold the schedule, but it still depends on everyone remembering to open it.

The Skylight Calendar brings the family plan into the room, where everyone can see it, use it, and participate in it.

Why this one matters

It moves family information out of one person’s memory.

In many homes, the schedule technically exists, but one person is still translating it for everyone else.

They’re answering what’s happening today, when practice starts, which chores are finished, what dinner will be, and whether the permission slip made it onto the calendar.

The Skylight Calendar doesn’t create the plan. It gives the plan a visible, shared home.

A family calendar becomes more useful when the family can see it without borrowing one person’s brain or phone.

The quick take

Why it works so well as a family command center.

๐Ÿ‘€

The plan is visible.

The schedule, chores, meals, and lists can live in a shared space instead of disappearing inside separate phones.

๐Ÿ”„

It works with calendars you already use.

You can sync supported online calendars instead of rebuilding the family schedule from scratch.

๐Ÿ™Œ

More people can participate.

Kids and adults can check schedules, complete chores, and see what comes next without asking one central person.

Everything it can do

One screen can support the schedule, the household, and the routines around both.

Some features are included with the Calendar, while others require the Calendar Plus subscription. We’ll separate those clearly below.

๐Ÿ“…

Synced family calendars

Combine supported calendars

Bring Google, Apple, Outlook, Yahoo, Cozi, and TeamSnap events into one visible family schedule.

Color-code family members

Give each person or calendar a recognizable color, so the schedule is easier to scan.

Update from the app

Add and manage events while you’re away from the display using the Skylight mobile app.

Keep multiple schedules visible

See school, work, sports, appointments, and family events together instead of checking separate places.

๐Ÿงน

Chores, tasks, and recurring routines

Assign chores

Give tasks to specific family members, so responsibility is visible instead of living in repeated verbal reminders.

Create recurring tasks

Set chores to repeat, so you don’t have to rebuild the same routine every day or week.

Check things off on the screen

Family members can mark tasks complete directly from the Calendar.

Add rewards with Plus

Calendar Plus can connect completed chores to stars and rewards for families who find that motivating.

๐Ÿฝ๏ธ

Meals, recipes, and grocery planning

Show the weekly meal plan

Put dinner where the whole family can see it, reducing the repeated question of what’s for dinner.

Save and organize recipes

Calendar Plus includes recipe and meal-planning tools that keep ideas connected to the weekly plan.

Ask Sidekick for meal ideas

Plus subscribers can use Sidekick to suggest meals based on family preferences.

Create grocery lists

Keep grocery items visible and editable from the Calendar or app, alongside other custom lists.

๐Ÿ“

Custom lists for everyday life

Grocery lists

Add items as they’re noticed, so the shopping list doesn’t depend on one person remembering everything later.

Packing lists

Keep trip, sports, school, or overnight lists visible and shared.

Wish lists and household lists

Create custom lists for whatever your family needs to collect, remember, or prepare.

Edit from home or away

Update lists from the touchscreen or the app, depending on where the thought occurs.

โœจ

Sidekick and Magic Import

Forward school emails

With Calendar Plus, forward an email and let Sidekick turn relevant details into calendar events.

Import PDFs and paper schedules

Plus can pull dates from flyers, schedules, and other documents instead of making you type every event manually.

Create lists from information

Sidekick can help turn incoming details into useful family lists.

Import and generate recipes

Plus includes recipe-import and meal-planning assistance for families who want those tools in the same place.

๐Ÿ

A visible home display

Touchscreen access

Family members can interact with the schedule, chores, and lists without needing their own device.

Photo and video screensaver with Plus

When the Calendar isn’t actively being used, Plus can turn it into a family photo and video display.

Use the app anywhere

The physical screen keeps the household informed, while the app lets adults manage details on the go.

Choose the size that fits the space

Skylight offers multiple Calendar sizes, so the best choice depends on viewing distance, wall space, and budget.

What requires a subscription?

The core family calendar works without Plus. The smarter importing and meal tools don’t.

This distinction matters. Don’t buy the Calendar assuming every advertised feature is included without an ongoing subscription.

Included

Skylight Calendar without Plus

The standard features already cover the main job of making family information visible.

  • Sync supported online calendars
  • Use the touchscreen family schedule
  • Manage the Calendar from the mobile app
  • Create chore charts and recurring tasks
  • Check off chores and tasks
  • Create grocery and custom lists
Calendar Plus

Additional subscription features

Plus is where the automatic importing, expanded meal tools, and reward features live.

  • Forward emails for Sidekick event creation
  • Import paper schedules, flyers, and PDFs
  • Use smart meal planning and recipe tools
  • Ask Sidekick for meal suggestions
  • Connect chores to stars and rewards
  • Use photo and video screensavers
  • Access Disney Mode
The feature that changes the workload

Forward the email instead of manually rebuilding the event.

School information rarely arrives in one clean calendar invitation. It arrives in newsletters, flyers, PDFs, long emails, and photos of paper schedules.

Sidekick’s value isn’t that it gives you another inbox. It’s that Calendar Plus can help translate those incoming details into something the family can actually see and use.

Forward the school email. Let Sidekick identify event details instead of copying every date, time, and location by hand.
Import the team schedule. Use a PDF, flyer, or photo when the information doesn’t come in a calendar-friendly format.
Make the result visible. Once the event is on the Calendar, everyone can see it without asking the person who received the original message.
Review before relying on it. Automatic imports are helpful, but important dates still deserve a quick human check.
Ways we’d use it

The best setup is the one that answers your family’s repeated questions.

Today’s family plan

Show school, work, appointments, practices, and pickup changes in one visible place.

Morning responsibilities

Use recurring chores or tasks for backpacks, water bottles, pet care, and other dependable morning jobs.

After-school routine

Make homework, activities, chores, and evening plans visible before the afternoon unravels.

Weekly meal plan

Put dinner on the screen, connect it to grocery planning, and stop carrying the whole menu inside one person’s head.

Household reset

Assign recurring jobs and let everyone see what has been completed without another round of asking.

Upcoming countdowns

Keep trips, birthdays, school breaks, and important family moments visible as they approach.

What we love

It makes invisible work easier to share.

A family calendar is often treated like a scheduling tool, but the more important job may be communication.

When the plan is visible, people can answer more of their own questions, participate in recurring tasks, and notice what tomorrow needs.

It doesn’t require everyone to remember to open an app. The plan is already present in the room.
It combines several kinds of family information. Schedules, chores, meals, and lists don’t have to live in unrelated systems.
It supports both adults and kids. Adults can manage details remotely, while kids can use the touchscreen display at home.
It can grow with the family’s routines. Start with the calendar, then add chores, meals, or lists only where they solve a real problem.
Things to know before buying

It still needs a thoughtful setup to become useful.

Placement matters.

Put it where the family naturally passes and can read it. A beautiful screen in an ignored corner won’t carry much information.

Some of the most exciting features cost extra.

Email forwarding, Magic Import, smart meal planning, rewards, and screensavers require Calendar Plus.

It won’t fix an overloaded calendar.

Making every obligation more visible doesn’t automatically make the schedule more manageable. The family plan still needs editing.

The curated find

The Skylight Calendar we’d recommend

I recommend starting with the smaller Calendar unless you already know you need a larger display for a big kitchen or a busy command center. Ours has been the perfect size for our family. It’s easy to read from across the room without taking over the space, and it fits naturally on a counter or mounted on the wall.

I’d also recommend starting without Calendar Plus. The standard Calendar already handles the features most families are looking for: Shared calendars, chores, recurring tasks, and lists. You can always upgrade later if you find yourself wanting the extra tools. There’s no pressure to decide on day one.

I originally upgraded for the meal planning features (which I still want to use more), but the surprise favorite has been the chore reward system. The Stars feature has been far more useful in our house than I expected, and it’s become the Plus feature I’d miss the most.

What family information is still living inside one person’s head?

Start with the questions everyone asks repeatedly. Put those answers somewhere visible, shared, and easier to use.

A helpful family command center doesn’t control the household. It gives the household fewer things to remember alone.
